“Our aim is to grow our church so more of our community will know the sacrifice Jesus made for us and the love he has for us”.

The foundation stone of St Stephens’ church was laid by Robert Ingham on December 26th, 1844. The church is a stone building in the early English style with dwarf spire.

In 1980 we became a United Benefice with St Aidan, then in 1995 the Parishes of St Aidan and St Stephen became The Parish of the Lawe (St Aidan with St Stephen).

Situated at the farthest reach of Durham diocese in the Archdeaconry of Sunderland and Deanery of Jarrow. The area is bordered by the River Tyne to the North and the beautiful coastline of the North Sea to the east.  The history of the area was very much tied to the ship building and fishing industries of the past.

The inside of the church is made up of original St Stephens and St Aidans church interiors.

In the 1970’s the church was converted to a dual purpose building. During the week the hall is used as a hall for activities such as parent and toddlers and fitness classes. We also hire the space out for birthday parties and concerts. The hall is then set back to a church layout for the Sunday services.
